Long before Obamacare became a household word, the People’s Health Clinic began filling the health care gaps in Summit and Wasatch counties.
In 1999, in recognition of the fact that many seasonal employees and hourly workers in the community were uninsured, a group of physicians and citizens helped to establish a mobile clinic to offer affordable medical services.
They purchased a van and wherever the van parked, people lined up for a variety of basic services. They came from all walks of life: service workers, construction workers, moms, people caught in sudden crises (the loss of a job or spouse, etc.).
There was no doubt the People’s Health Clinic had found a niche. And it wasn’t long before local employers realized how valuable the clinic was in supporting their labor force as well. Generous donors and dedicated volunteers eventually made it possible to establish a home for the clinic and the well-traveled van was ultimately donated to a community in Mexico.
Then came the recession and people who never expected to need free or subsidized medical care soon found themselves relying on the People’s Health Clinic too.
This week the clinic marks its 15th year in operation — a milestone that should make the entire community proud. The clinic is now housed within the recently built county health department building in Round Valley and boasts eight exam rooms covering 5,000 square feet — firmly planted in the community, not on wheels.
However, like any nonprofit, the future of the People’s Health Clinic is dependent on continued support from the community. The well-run organization receives several government grants and, recognizing the value of a healthy workforce, large employers have also been generous.
But keeping up with increasing demand is always a challenge. One way to help is to attend the clinic’s annual Silver Queen Derby Fundraiser, a fun luncheon at Stein Eriksen Lodge. The themed event, with prizes offered for the most original hats, takes place Saturday, May 2, and reservations are still available, but must be made ASAP.
