The Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter will waive admission to its exhibit “Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact” on Saturday, April 27, as the nonprofit hosts Earth Day activities later this month.

Earth Day may only be on April 22, but The Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter have nature-themed fun planned for the entire family to enjoy throughout the month of April.

The nonprofit, which is part of the Utah State University Extension, will kick off the festivities by hosting its annual Kimball Junction Trash Cleanup on April 20.

Garbage accumulates over the winter and some of it ends up on the Swaner Preserve which can be dangerous for wildlife and detrimental to the functions of the wetlands.

Volunteers who participate in this cleanup are entered into an opportunity drawing for fun prizes and gift cards from local sponsors.

Following Earth Day, the EcoCenter will partner with Park City Film to host a free screening of “In the Dirt” at 7 p.m. on April 25 at the Park City Library’s Jim Santy Auditorium. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

“In the Dirt” tells a story about cycling on the Navajo Nation and will inspire viewers to think about their connection to the land.

“In celebration of Earth Month, we’re excited to host a variety of activities where our community can learn about the value of nature and how we can nurture both the ecosystem we live in and the people connected with it,” said Hunter Klingensmith, Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter director of exhibits and visitor experience. “We hope that these events will give participants resources to act boldly, innovate broadly, and implement equitably to invest in our planet in whatever way they can.”

The Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter will celebrate Earth Day throughout the month of April. Activities include its annual Kimball Junction Trash Cleanup, above, on April 20, a free film screening of “In the Dirt” with Park City Film on April 25, and the City Nature Challenge from April 26-29.

Swaner Preserve & EcoCenter will end Earth Month fun with activities to get folks involved in the City Nature Challenge from  April 26-29.

The public is invited to the EcoCenter that weekend to participate in a different activity each day. From learning to use iNaturalist on Friday, April 26, to free guided nature walks on Saturday, April 27, to crafting a nature journal on Sunday, April 28, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Lastly, the EcoCenter’s traveling exhibition, “Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact,” is on display through May 5.

The public is invited to explore this exhibition before it’s gone, so there will be free admission on Saturday, April 27, thanks to the nonprofit’s generous sponsors.

Registration and more details for these events and others can be found at extension.usu.edu/swaner/calendar.

Founded and directed by Broadway, Ballet West, Film and TV veteran Derryl Yeager, Odyssey Dance Theatre is a professional jazz/ballet company with performance opportunities, including three home seasons in Salt Lake City with over 30 performances, plus a European Tour in the Spring. Some of Odyssey Dance Theatre veterans have appeared on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

After 28 years of providing the community with innovative and exciting performances, Yeager and his wife, costume designer and costume production director Cheryl Yeager, took a little sabbatical and are feeling re-invigorated and re-inspired.

During this time, there have been no scheduled performances, but Odyssey has continued to make dance accessible with its Community Outreach Program.

Odyssey Dance Theatre’s mission remains to train Utah’s talented dancers, from nurturing emerging artists through Odyssey 2, its pre-professional scholarship training program and giving hundreds of students the opportunity to perform in such productions as “Thriller,” “Redux Nut-Cracker” and “It’s A Wonderful Life” performances.

Odyssey has also provided live performance-art access to thousands of at-risk youth by donating 8,989 free tickets and delighting 7,885 with free school performances.

During the 2023-2024 season, the company granted 10 dance scholarships to young people who showed promise but didn’t have the means to continue their training.

In addition, Odyssey is collaborating with Salt Lake County Youth Services Afterschool Programs to provide dance classes in schools of underserved students.

Odyssey Dance Theatre has also won a string of awards including Best of State in Dance for 17 years in a row; Best of State of all Arts and Entertainment in 2007 and 2015 and Best Choreographer in 2009.

Odyssey 2 and Odyssey Dance Theatre also represented Utah on the world’s stage, and was invited to perform at the 2008 Booking Dance Festival that coincided with the Beijing Summer Olympics.

Ballet West compiles "Love and War," and evening full of works that runs April 12-20 in Salt Lake City.

Ballet West will revive Kurt Jooss’s 1932 work “The Green Table” on April 12-20 at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City. In the work, featuring a score for two pianos by Frederick Cohen, Jooss depicts the futility of war, its tragedy and the redemptive power of humanity. The ballet will be performed with the Utah Premiere of William Forsythe’s “Blake Works I” and Ulysses Dove’s “Red Angels.”

Ballet West shares a not-to-be missed program during a timely moment of current affairs across the globe with their final main-stage production of “Love and War,” running April 12-20 at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, 50 W. 200 South, Salt Lake City.

Featured in the program is one of the world’s greatest ballet masterpieces, Kurt Jooss’ 1932 work “The Green Table,” returning to the Ballet West stage with a spellbinding score for two pianos by Frederick Cohen.

In eight profoundly moving scenes, Jooss and Cohen depict the futility of war, its tragedy and the redemptive power of humanity.

The 1932 antiwar piece was entered into a festival in 1939, where it won first prize, earning an invitation by Adolf Hitler for Jooss to become the national choreographer for Germany, but only if he dismissed his Jewish company members.

Jooss refused and chose to escape Germany, along with his family, company and fellow collaborators.

“‘The Green Table’ is a masterpiece and in many ways one of the greatest theater works of all time.” said Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute.

“Presented in a series of stark, but emotional tableaux based on medieval wood cuts, it is the epitome of German Expressionism from the early 20th Century. It is about war, but its genius lies in the fact that the ballet never picks sides; it never preaches right or wrong, simply that the ultimate winner in war is always only death. The ballet is a profoundly moving experience for artist and audience alike.”

The program will also feature Ballet West’s revival of fiery and dynamic “Red Angels,” choreographed by Ulysses Dove with music by Richard Einhorn.

The production includes four dancers accompanied by an electric violin and played by the original interpreter, Mary Rowell, one of only two people in the world to perform the score, presenting a nonstop outpouring of energy and passion.

The “Love and War” program will open with the Utah Premiere of William Forsythe’s “Blake Works I.”

Set to the tuneful and moody songs of British singer songwriter James Blake, “Blake Works I” is filled with Forsythe’s unique blend of hyperextended classical vocabulary and distinctive, unexpected directional changes, while always maintaining a classical purity.

The Artists of Ballet West perform “The Green Table,” an anti-war work created in 1932 by Kurt Jooss.

Forsythe is recognized as one of the greatest living choreographers in the world, creating this elegant and sensual work on the Paris Opera Ballet in 2016. And to date, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet and now Ballet West are the only American companies given permission to produce the work.

“This is a spectacular full-company work that really extends our dancers abilities,” said Sklute. “Forsythe’s way of moving demands a great deal of athleticism and speed. His work requires dancers to change direction in an instant and extend movement beyond what they are physically used to. This is what makes the work exciting both for the artist and the audience. But ‘Blake Works I’ also surprises us with its unexpected purity of line and approach. It may be one of Forsythe’s most stately works, and its elegance is what, to me, makes it such a good fit for Ballet West’s artists.”
