Park City Utah Department of Transportation Supervisor Morgan McCarthy opened the gates to Empire Pass Thursday morning for the summer season.
With the temperature in the low 20s and windy, light snow flurries, it did not feel much like summer, but now Parkites can drive from Park City to Brighton and down to Midway on Pine Canyon Road. Guardsman Pass road near the summit still has patches of ice and blowing snow demanding careful driving in spots. The Blood Lake, Empire Pass and the Bonanza Flats trailheads are still closed until the snow melts, which is more than five feet deep in some spots.
UPDATE ON MIRROR LAKE HIGHWAY
Mirror Lake Highway (S.R. 150) is still closed at Soapstone Trailhead until the UDOT crews can clear the highway over Bald Mountain Pass and beyond toward the Wyoming state line. This week they encountered snow depths exceeding six feet deep above Upper Provo River Falls and the Cold Springs area below Bald Mountain Pass.
