Local golf legend offers his tip of the week
Local gold instruction legend Jim Suttie is offering his first tip of the week with The Park Record. Suttie is the director of instruction during the summers and early-falls at Soldier Hollow and Wasatch golf clubs. He is in the halls of fame for several organizations, including Golf Magazine, Illinois Golf and Northern Illinois University, having instructed numerous PGA players in the past. The following is his tip on how to combat on-course nerves:
“Now that we are into the golf season, there is a question that many of you ask me — ‘Why do I hit the ball great on the range and terrible on the course?’ The answer I always give them is tension. I generally tell golfers to relax their grip when they play, and this tends to solve the problem. Also, when on the range, you are only hitting only one shot, but when you go out on the course you have to hit many different shots, this also creates tension and lack of confidence. My advice is try to hit many different types of shots when you are practicing, start with putting, chipping and pitching, then when you get to the driving range vary your targets and use different clubs. Stay relaxed when you play and eliminate holding the club tight, and remember golf is supposed to be fun, so stay relaxed and have fun.”
