Ian Hartley’s letter, “Consequences of the e-bike revolution,” reminded me of an overheard comment as I was picking my way down Park Avenue on my road bike through the departing Fourth of July parade crowd. 

“Look at that guy,” a dad said to his kids, gesturing toward me. “That guy’s old school. See, no battery. He has to pedal.” 

When a dad has to explain to his kids that “old school” people on bikes actually pedal them, I’m afraid we’ve jumped the shark. Why do parents buy their kids e-bikes anyway?
