La ciudad de Park City, su alcalde Dana Williams, el manager del Centro de Recreación, Ken Fisher, la linda gente de Recreación Basin y muchos otros ciudadanos de Park City han estado preocupados en ofrecer más oportunidades de recreación y deportes a nuestra comunidad latina.
Un año atrás una madre me llamó por teléfono y me expresó los deseos que tenía de registrar a su hijo en alguno de los programas de verano en el Racquet Club; cuando fue al escritorio de la entrada, se encontró con la realidad que allí nadie podía entenderla, ni en español ni en su inglés..
Le dieron el nombre y teléfono de una persona que supuestamente podría ayudarle. Puedo entender la frustación de ambas partes. El empleado/a que quiere ayudar y no puede y por otra parte esta madre que quiere que su hijo use su tiempo sabiamente en el verano y no puede hacerse entender. Esta realidad existe y no podemos culpar a nadie. No podemos esperar que todas las personas sepan nuestro idioma (el español) cuando muchos de nosotros no sabemos el inglés, el cual es el idioma del país que residimos. Lo que puedo decirles es que tengamos paciencia el uno con el otro. Las autoridades de la ciudad saben de la necesidad de personas bilingues en ciertas posiciones claves pero al mismo tiempo hay muchas personas que han servido en muchos puestos por muchos años fielmente y en el pasado no tenían la necesidad de conocer otro idioma para poder servir a sus clientes o consumidores; debemos demostrar a otros el mismo respeto y paciencia que todos anhelamos.
Lo que me da mucha alegría es que más y más esfuerzos se están haciendo para poder alcanzar a aquellos que por diferentes razones ya sea de lenguaje, económicas o sociales no han participado en los programas recreativos de la ciudad.
Por favor, marquen en su calendario y no se olviden de participar en dos “Casas Abiertas” que El Centro de Recreación de Park City y Basin Recreation han organizado especialmente para usted; los días son, el 11 de abril de las 5:30 p.m. a 7 p.m. en el Park City Racquet Club, 1200 Little Kate Rd (Park Meadows) y el 18 de abril de 6:30 p.m. a 8 p.m. en La Casa Central de Basin Recreation en el New Park.
Se está invitando a toda la comunidad Latina a que asista y así pueda informarse de todos los programas recreativos para el verano que ya se aproxima.
Se tendrá información y detalles; algunos de ellos incluyen clases para aprender nadar (grupos de diferentes edades y níveles de abilidad). Campamentos de verano, aventura y de deportes como por ejemplo el de fútbol que tendrá varias sesiones, y horarios (de mañana, tarde y todo el día); al igual que clínicas para aprender a skateboard (de padres e hijos) y de ciclismo de montaña y salto.
Se ofrecerá un “Programa de Costo Reducido” donde las familias que son legibles podrán participar y recibir reducciones consideradas en las cuotas de participación. Así que si los veranos pasados no han sido tan entusiasmados para sus hijo/as, no se preocupe; se puede oler en el aire el cambio que va a pasar y muchos van a ser los beneficiados.
Por favor comente esto con sus vecinas/os e invitélos a ir juntos así pueden ir en grupo y ahorrar gasolina y lugar de estacionamiento.

Seeking more participation of Latinos in rec programs
Park City officials have been talking about offering more opportunities for recreation and sports to our Latin community. A year ago a mother called me on the telephone and she expressed the desire to register her son in some of the summer programs at the Racquet Club, but when she went to the reception desk, she found that nobody could understand her there — either in Spanish or English. They gave her the name and telephone of a person that supposedly would be able to help her. I can understand the frustration on both sides. The employee that wants to help and isn’t able to and, on the other hand, this mother who wants her son to be able to use his time wisely in the summer and can’t make herself understood. This reality exists and we cannot blame anyone. We can’t expect that all the people know our language (Spanish) when many of us don’t know English, which is the language of the country where we reside. What I can tell you is that we should be patient with each other. The city authorities know the need for bilingual people in certain key positions but, at the same time, there are many employees who have served in positions for many years and in the past, didn’t need to know another language to be able to serve their clients or customers. We should show others the same respect and patience that we all long for.
It makes me very happy to know that more and more efforts are being made to be able to reach all those that for reasons of language or economic and social issues have not participated in the recreational programs of the city. Please, mark in your calendar and don’t forget to participate in two “open houses” that Park City Recreation and Basin Recreation have organized especially for you; the dates are April 11, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Park City Racquet Club, 1200 Little Kate Rd. (Park Meadows), and April 18, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the head office of Basin Recreation in Newpark.
The Latino community has been invited to attend and thus can be informed of all the recreational programs for the approaching summer.
The open houses will offer information and details, including swimming classes for groups of different ages and levels of ability, summer camps, adventures and sports. For example, soccer will have several sessions, and schedules, hourly (morning, afternoon and all day). At the same time, there will be clinics to learn to skateboard (for parents and children) and mountain cycling and jumping. There will be a “Cost Reduced Program” where families that are eligible will be able to participate and receive discounts in the participation fees. So, if the past summers have not been so fun for your son or daughter, don’t worry — I can smell a change in the air and many are going to benefit. Please talk about it with your neighbors and invite them to go with you, in groups to save gasoline and parking places.
