Las damas primero, de modo que hablaré acerca de este tema importante que afecta nuestras “Latinas,” o mujeres hispanas y ha sido la preocupación de muchos; incluyendo la Alianza de Servicios a La Comunidad. Esta es una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona la comunidad servicios y promueve conocimiento cultural. Tuve la oportunidad de concer a Jorge J. Arce-Larreta, el fundador y director general de Alianza; él compartió conmigo las buenas noticias que La Fundacion de George S. y la Base de Dolores Doré Eccles ha concedido una beca a su organización para incrementar los beneficios de la detección temprana del cancer de seno. En los últimos cinco años, el Proyecto Latino de Educacion sobre Cáncer de Seno ha estado educando a más de 3,000 mujeres hispanas con información acerca de la importancia de la detección temprana y ha referido a casi 2,000 mujeres para hacerse mamografias gratis o a bajo costo. Esto complementará efectivamente el programa de educación de salud que la Alianza actualmente ofrece incluyendo “Triunfadoras” un grupo de apoyo a mujeres con cáncer de seno. “Estamos muy contentos acerca de este programa, en Alianza creemos a implementar soluciones,” dijo Arce-Larreta. “El trabajo que hacemos está en conformidad con nuestra misión de facilitar el crecimiento personal, promover auto-ayuda y mejorar la calidad de la vida en nuestra comunidad. Estamos honrados que la Fundación ECCLES comparta nuestra misión y nos hay elegido para administrar este programa”.
Este gran proyecto proporcionará presentaciones educativas en los condados de Utah, Weber y Summit así como información acerca de servicios de cáncer de seno a mujeres hispanas.
Me puse y estoy muy feliz al saber que esto esta ocurriendo y los esfuerzos de educar y salvar vidas se estan desarrollando. A medida que converso con mamás en la comunidad me doy cuenta que solo algunas han tenido momografias en sus vidas. Todos sabemos que es una tecnología avanzada y sofisticada el discernir cualquier anormalidad en el seno, se ejecuta generalmente en un hospital y nosotros sabemos que esto equivale a mucho dinero. Las buena noticia es que si usted califica, puede tener este procedimiento gratis o por un pago mínimo.
La primera reunión en el Condado de Summit se aproxima y queremos que todas las mujeres mayors de 40 años vayan a la Escuela McPolin el jueves el 26 de abril, 2007 a las 6:30 de la tarde. Las personas dedicadas de la Alianza ofrecerán refrigerios y guardería para los que lo necesitan.
Ahora quiero dirigirme a los trabajadores latinos; por favor, lleve el próximo jueves a su querida esposa, su madre o su tía a McPolin para que aprendan como salvar sus vidas y luego usted debe ir a la Iglesia Católica de Santa Maria donde una reunión ha sido preparada para poder proteger su vida también.
Los Fondos de la Compensación de trabajadores han coordinado una serie de reuniones con el Departamento de Protección del Consulado Mexicano, el cual hablará también en la reunión acerca de su papel y los recursos disponibles a los trabajadores.
Es muy triste escuchar que los accidentes y las muertes han subido entre los trabajadores hispanos en Utah. El propósito de esta reunión es el de educar acerca de la seguridad en el lugar de trabajo y para informarle acerca de sus derechos y responsabilidades cuando usted sufre un accidente.
Sé que muchos empleadores no proporcionan el equipo correcto, que podria proteger las vidas de los trabajadores cuando estan en situaciones peligrosas. En este caso, ellos son responsables de la seguridad de sus empleados y sobre sus hombros no sólo esta la vida del trabajador pero también el bienestar de su familia.
Si usted no ha sido proporcionado con equipo apropiado venga a la reunión y aprenderá lo que le puede hacer. Sé también que muchos hombres se consideran muy machos para usar ese equipo “chiflado”; piensan que saben su trabajo tan bien y lo han hecho por tanto tiempo sin usarlo, ¿por qué empezara a usarlo ahora? Si usted tiene equipo de seguridad disponible y decide no utilizarlo y un día de éstos, se cae y pierde uno de sus brazos o sus dos piernas ¿Sabe lo qué puede hacer? ¿Cuáles son sus derechos? Venga por favor a la reunión! Este próximo jueves el 26 de abril 2007, a las 6:30 de la tarde en La Iglesia de María en Park City. Usted aprenderá de: Información sobre seguridad, los derechos de los trabajadores relacionados con las heridas sufridas en el lugar de trabajo, los beneficios de un trabajador, información de cómo reportar un accidente; obteniendo ayuda en español. Algo para recordar, estas dos reuniones son totalmente gratis!

Ladies, get a mammogram! Men, use safety equipment at work!
Ladies first, so I will talk about this important subject that affects our “Latinas,” or Hispanic women, and it has been the worry of many; including Alliance Community Services. This is a nonprofit organization that provides community services and promotes cultural awareness. I had the opportunity of meeting Jorge J. Arce-Larreta, founder and CEO of Alliance. He shared with me the good news that The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation just awarded a grant to his organization to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer.
For the last past five years, the Latina Breast Cancer Project has educated more than 3,000 Hispanic women with information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and has referred almost 2,000 women to low-cost or free mammograms and clinical breast exams. This will effectively complement the portfolio of health education programs Alliance currently offers including their “Triunfadoras” Hispanic Breast Cancer Support Group.
“We are thrilled about this program. At Alliance we believe in implementing solutions,” said Arce-Larreta. “The work we do is in compliance with our mission to facilitate personal growth, promote self sufficiency and improve the quality of life in our community. We are proud that Eccles Foundation shares our mission and has chosen to support this program.”
This great program will provide educational presentations in Utah, Weber and Summit counties and provide information about breast cancer services to Hispanic women.
I’m very happy that this is occurring and efforts to educate and save lives are continuing. As I talk to moms in the community, I know that only a handful have had even one mammogram in their lives. We all know that it is an advanced and sophisticated technology to detect any abnormality in the breast. It is usually done at a hospital and we know that means a lot of money. The good news is that if you qualify, you may have this procedure free or for just a minimal fee.
The first meeting for Summit County is coming up and we want all our ladies 40 years and over to show up at McPolin Elementary School on Thursday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. The wonderful people of Alliance will provide snacks and child care for those who need it.
Now I want to talk to the hardworking Latin men. Please, next Thursday, take your lovely wife, mother or aunt to McPolin so they can learn about saving their lives, and then go to St. Mary’s Catholic Church where an evening has been prepared that can also save your life. Workers Compensation Fund is coordinating a series of town hall meetings, together with the Protection Department of the Mexican Consulate, who will also speak at the meeting about their role and resources available to workers.
It’s sad to hear that injuries and fatalities have been on the rise for Utah’s Hispanic workers. The purpose of this meeting is to educate about safety in the workplace and to inform you about your rights and responsibilities when you suffer an accident.
I know that many employers don’t provide the correct equipment to protect lives when men are working in dangerous situations. They are responsible for their workers’ safety and on their shoulders is not only the life of each employee but the well being of each man’s family. If you are not being provided with appropriate gear, come to the meeting and find out what you can do. I also know that many men are too macho to use that “silly” stuff. They think that they know their work so well and have managed for so long without it, what’s the point in starting to use it now? If you have available safety gear and choose not to use it and one of these days you fall and lose an arm or both of your legs what can you do? What are your rights? Please come to the meeting! Again, it’s Thursday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Church in Park City. You’ll be given safety information, learn about workers rights related to injuries suffered at the workplace, benefits entitled to a worker, information on how to report an accident and getting assistance in Spanish.
One thing to remember is that these two meetings are totally free!
