The local Republican “stalwart” (your description), Bruce Hough, has shown us all what’s wrong with politics in this country (“President Biden travels to Park City area this week, prompting message to ‘Keep your hands off Utah,'” Aug. 9). For him to say “I am suspicious when a Democrat takes a personal interest in our state” is a sad commentary on the current state of political affairs.

The president is the president of ALL 50 states as well as various territories and possessions, not just the states that voted for him. He has every right — indeed, an obligation — to take an interest in each and every state, territory and possession, and I have a feeling Mr. Hough would just as soon castigate the president if he thought Biden was ignoring Utah.

I recall President Clinton taking an interest in our state when he supported Salt Lake’s Olympics bid, which was awarded during his presidency. Was Mr. Hough suspicious then?

President Biden is doing his job on behalf of all of us, those who voted for him and those who voted against him. If you want to criticize him over policy disagreements, fine. If you have policies to propose that you think are better, fine. But to criticize the president of the United States for visiting one of the states is contemptible.

Or does Mr. Hough not understand the meaning of the word “united” in our country’s name?
