Local politics has the greatest impact on all our daily lives.

Whether it’s traffic, affordable housing or development, we need a Summit County Council with diverse voices and the experience to guide us through the inevitable changes coming our way.

There are many reasons I’m voting for Megan McKenna. Here are a few:

Megan has the personal character traits we need on council. Megan is skilled in negotiation and diplomacy. At only 23, she was a negotiator for the ski patrol union; she has their endorsement. When Megan was working for the school district, she was involved in the teacher’s union, and during Covid, she was an advocate for Summit County Health helping locals.

With the impending local development, a just say “no” attitude is only going to send developers to the Legislature, side-stepping the county. Sitting down and negotiating a solution locally is certainly better than having the Legislature determine what development should look like in Summit County. Remember MIDA?

Megan understands that housing those who work locally with responsible mixed-use development is key in helping to resolve traffic, housing and other issues we are currently struggling with in our community. An expert on innovative housing programs would provide more perspective on our County Council.

Megan has been an advocate for the environment and affordable housing for many years, and brings knowledge on solutions being used by other communities we should be considering as we update our master plan.

Megan has the science background that is missing on our current council. She brings an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry, as well as a master’s degree in science teaching. She taught environmental science for years and understands how interconnected and complex these issues are. As we look at solutions to mitigate the environmental impacts in our community, a person with a background in science, who is also passionate about safeguarding our outdoor life style, is critical.

Megan grew up and has lived/worked in Summit Country for decades. Between her years of working on Ski Patrol, teaching at Park City School District and her current experience with Mountainlands, she is part of the fabric of our community.

And finally, from a governance perspective, it is important to not have too many people with planning commission voices on our council (there are already two). We must have a variety of perspectives and different backgrounds representing the entire community on County Council.

And if this isn’t enough, we still don’t have many female voices on council, so consider this as you vote on June 25. It is for these reasons I hope you’ll join me in voting for Megan McKenna.
