Founded and directed by Broadway, Ballet West, Film and TV veteran Derryl Yeager, Odyssey Dance Theatre is a professional jazz/ballet company with performance opportunities, including three home seasons in Salt Lake City with over 30 performances, plus a European Tour in the Spring. Some of Odyssey Dance Theatre veterans have appeared on “So You Think You Can Dance.”

After 28 years of providing the community with innovative and exciting performances, Yeager and his wife, costume designer and costume production director Cheryl Yeager, took a little sabbatical and are feeling re-invigorated and re-inspired.

During this time, there have been no scheduled performances, but Odyssey has continued to make dance accessible with its Community Outreach Program.

Odyssey Dance Theatre’s mission remains to train Utah’s talented dancers, from nurturing emerging artists through Odyssey 2, its pre-professional scholarship training program and giving hundreds of students the opportunity to perform in such productions as “Thriller,” “Redux Nut-Cracker” and “It’s A Wonderful Life” performances.

Odyssey has also provided live performance-art access to thousands of at-risk youth by donating 8,989 free tickets and delighting 7,885 with free school performances.

During the 2023-2024 season, the company granted 10 dance scholarships to young people who showed promise but didn’t have the means to continue their training.

In addition, Odyssey is collaborating with Salt Lake County Youth Services Afterschool Programs to provide dance classes in schools of underserved students.

Odyssey Dance Theatre has also won a string of awards including Best of State in Dance for 17 years in a row; Best of State of all Arts and Entertainment in 2007 and 2015 and Best Choreographer in 2009.

Odyssey 2 and Odyssey Dance Theatre also represented Utah on the world’s stage, and was invited to perform at the 2008 Booking Dance Festival that coincided with the Beijing Summer Olympics.

Odyssey Dance Theatre will present its own version of the holiday dance classic "The Nutcracker" at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City, from Dec. 19 through Dec. 21.

Evening curtain is 7:30 p.m. and there will be an additional matinee at 2 p.m. on Dec. 21.

Imagine Clara as the young lady whose imagination is inspired by the technological advances of today and is drawn into her smartphone to a magical world where Drosselmeyer drives a DeLorean, the soldiers are actually robots and the gangsta mice have a hip-hop swagga.

Tickets range from $20 to $40 and available by calling the Kingsbury Hall ticket office at 801-581-7100 or by visiting www.odysseydance.com.
