The Art House Convergence has announced its first class of Sundance Institute Art House Project theaters, designed to recognize theaters in North America that embody a benchmark of excellence in programming, community involvement and operations.
The Park City Film Series is among those who achieved recognition.
The 23 theaters selected for the Sundance Institute Art House Project applied for this recognition and were found to meet high standards including: quality programming, deep involvement with their local communities, strong financial standing, and recognition from their peers and their communities. The program is a unique opportunity for theaters interested in further engaging with the Art House Convergence and Sundance Institute.
“We are thrilled to be recognized as a Sundance Institute Art House Project theater,” said Katharine Wang, Executive Director of the Park City Film Series.
“We have worked hard in recent years to elevate our status as an arts organization and become a place where community members come to be engaged, entertained and inspired — with film as the hub. Living as we do in the home of the Sundance Film Festival it is exciting to be part of a group that includes so many highly regarded Art House theaters from around the country.” Wang added.
The Art House Convergence began in 2005 as the Sundance Institute Art House Project, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Sundance Institute by honoring a small group of leading U.S. Art House theatres. A few years later, this grew into the independently run Art House Convergence, which in 2008 presented its first annual conference, an industry educational program designed to empower and inform independent cinemas nationwide. The growth of the Art House Convergence and its development of research, surveys and year round communication among art house theaters affirm that the organization has evolved into a leading national resource for the support of independent film and the promotion of film culture in local communities. The upcoming annual conference will be January 18 21, 2016 in Midway, Utah.
The Sundance Institute Art House Project is the perfect collaboration for these two organizations working to enrich cinema culture in North America. In creating this benchmark of excellence, the Art House Convergence and Sundance Institute can continue to build the foundation of a rapidly growing movement of local, community-based independent theaters.
