In her third year as the CEO of the Sundance Institute, Joana Vicente brings years of experience in the world of independent film, having produced 20 films which showed at Sundance Film Festival over the years. Vicente said as a leader for Sundance Institute, she is compelled to position the organization as a place that encourages and enables filmmakers to seek their highest level of creativity.

Vicente has been recognized as a leading figure transforming the film world to digital media; notably, she helped co-found the digital production companies Blow-up Pictures and HDNetFilms. Prior to joining Sundance Institute, she spent three years as the executive director and co-head of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the TIFF organization. Before that, she spent nearly a decade as the executive director of the nonprofit Independent Filmmaker Project (now the Gotham Film & Media Institute).
