If you’re driving into town past the Park City Golf Course July 30 and see golfers and their carts dressed up in all pink, that’s the Women’s League 9.

The Park City women’s league, the largest of its kind in Utah, will be hosting their annual cancer fundraiser on the 30th. At the Rally for a Cure day, the league will look to raise over $13,000 for three nearby cancer charities: the People’s Health Clinic, Image Reborn Foundation and the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

While $13,000 is a hefty goal, the league has done it before — last year. They have over 300 members and space for all of them on the course and at the fundraiser.

The fundraiser began as part of a nationwide trend back in the ’90s. The league uses an opportunity drawing, tee box signage sponsorships and for-pay mulligans to help raise thousands each year.

“We sort of are staying with the same format,” said league board chairman Kathy Roll. “This year, we are going to have a separate section for the prizes that are donated by local private golf courses in and around Park City.”

Roll was excited for a donor to win a prize basket from Black Desert Golf Course down in Ivins. Black Desert will become Utah’s first PGA event host since 1963 this fall.

Women’s 9 League members staff a table at a prior Rally for a Cure fundraiser.

The more someone donates, the higher shot they have at walking away with the Black Desert and other prize baskets.

“We will have at least 18 sponsors, and we have mainly local companies who have contributed at least $400 to have their names featured at each of the tees,” said league board member Callaway Zuccarello. “As our 300 members play the game, they will see that these generous organizations have contributed to Rally for a Cure.”

Tuesdays are the leagues bread and butter, meeting each week May through September when weather favors their course. The league is social and laid back, they said, and members owe $50 in dues and aren’t obligated to play every week.

Callaway noted that the league is unfortunately done accepting new members this season due to their capacity. Non-members will be unable to play golf at the fundraiser but are more than welcome to participate in its other activities. All league members will be accommodated for play if they so choose.

“We encourage everybody to come out on the 30th and join in the festivities and also dress up in pink to highlight our causes,” added Roll. “Most of our fundraising goes toward women’s causes. We support People’s Health Clinic and help women who can’t afford mammograms get them and also appointments with the health providers there. We support Huntsman Cancer Institute, which does research for breast cancer and other cancers, and we also support Image Reborn, which is a charity that helps women who have had primarily breast cancer try to get their lives back.”

The course won’t be totally shut to the public either, offering tee times from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as they do every Tuesday during league season. Roll hopes to see some non-league golfers getting involved in the festivities.

Opportunity drawing winners will be announced around 5:30 and 6 on the 30th, and they are not required to be in attendance to collect their prizes.

“We have this automatic draw from women who want to golf or who haven’t,” added Zuccarello. “They don’t have to be fantastic golfers. They just want to have fun and meet other women in the community. Our league is so inclusive and welcoming, and it’s just a very unique culture, in part set by the women who’ve been golfing with the league for a long time, as well as the pro shop at Park City.”
