Max Joseph Paap Ogimaawajiweb, Migizi-doodem, age 61, member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, resident of Bayfield, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023 surrounded by family at home. He was born on March 15, 1962 in Madison, Wisconsin to Howard Ozhaawashko Migizi Aanakwad and Marlene Paap.
Max loved people. Every position he held, from bartending to working for city and tribal governments, was centered around creating memorable experiences for others. This was further portrayed in his passion for athletics, playing and later supporting teams at all levels. There was no bigger fan of Minnesota sports teams than Max Paap.
Max is survived by his parents, Howard & Marlene Paap, his siblings, Beth ManidooMakwa Paap and Keller Waawaakeyaash Paap & Lisa Bebaamaashiikwe LaRonge, six nieces and nephews: Mijen Armstrong, Grace Armstrong, Elsa Armstrong, Binesi Paap, Sawyer Armstrong, and Memengwaa Paap, his loving girlfriend Beth Erickson, and numerous aunties, uncles, and cousins.
A funeral service and community meal was held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Bayfield Pavilion – Bayfield, WI with Deacon Roger Cadotte officiating. Visitation begins at 5:00 P.M., Wednesday at the Bayfield Pavilion, with a 6:00 P.M. prayer service, led by Deacon Roger Cadotte.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the School District of Bayfield’s Athletic Program and the ALS Association of Wisconsin.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Firestar Charette, Theresa Gordon, Kelly Charette, Tammie Couch, Debbie Newago, Peter Newago, Anna Rantala, Michelle Marchese, and Fran DePerry for their compassionate care during Max’s final days.
