Summit Pediatrics is partnering with the Park City Medical Center this week to offer parents more insight on healthy living, for their children and themselves. Addressing a wide range of topics, the Park City Medical Center LiVe Well Center and the hospital’s head chef will be available to discuss topics such as gluten-free food options, exercise and diet routines, food allergies and immunity-boosting recipes.

"I think there is so much information out there, whether it is on the Internet or on television," said Vanessa Laurella, the Director of the LiVe Well Center, "what is healthy and what is not. With all that excess, parents can struggle with what to do."

"At this event, parents will be able to get evidence-based information," she added, "researched information on how parents can support their children to live healthier lifestyles."

Citing prevalent hot-button topics such as the skyrocketing childhood obesity rates and early type-2 diabetes diagnoses, Laurella said that parents need to know what is in the food they pick up at grocery store, need to make smart choices on what is allowed in the pantry. A live cooking demonstration will be included as part of the event, where parents will get a first-hand look at how to prepare child-friendly meals that include fruits and vegetables.

"One thing about our chefs and the LiVe Well Center is that they do not believe in just calories," said Amy Roberts, the Park City Medical Center spokesperson. "It is also about information. Their philosophy is that the more you understand about how body works, the better it works."

The event is free, open to the public and is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Park City Medical Center in the lobby of the LiVe Well Center.
