The Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame inducted three new ski enthusiasts and gave out an award on Wednesday night at the induction ceremony for its Class of 2024.
The inductees were Steve Bounous of Provo, Bob Wheaton of Park City and Raelene Davis of Salt Lake City.
Their names were added to 91 other notables in the 22-year-old hall located in the Alf Engen Ski Museum at Utah Olympic Park, four miles north of Park City.
Barbara Yamada of Park City received the museum’s Crystal Award for her years of service to various organizations: to the museum as a founding board member, to the Olympic/Paralympic Winter Games, to the University of Utah Ski Teams, to the Utah Ski and Snow Sport Archives Board in which she chairs and many other programs.
The induction/awards ceremonies, attended by 300, were held at The Chateaux at Deer Valley.
The Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame provided these descriptions of its Class of 2024 members:
- Bob Wheaton — Hired on at Utah’s Deer Valley Resort as a maintenance worker in 1979, Wheaton became president in 1997. His penchant for providing resort guests exceptional services on and off the slopes brought Utah prominent world-wide exposure as highlighted by Deer Valley guests in Ski Magazine reader surveys rating it among the top three resorts in North America for 20 consecutive years and No. 1 an unprecedented eight times.
- Steve Bounous — As executive eirector and coach of the Snowbird Sports Education Foundation from 1989 to 2019, he dispensed his respect for the mountains, snow safety and camaraderie to an expansive community of coaches, racers, freeride, para snow sports and recreational skiers. Earlier, he was a Junior National slalom and giant slalom champion, an NCAA All American for the University of Utah Ski Team, coached the 1988 Guatemalan Olympic Ski Team, was a Pro Tour slalom winner, and appeared in five Warren Miller movies. (His father, Junior Bounous, is a member of the first class inducted into the Intermountain Hall of Fame in 2002.)
- Raelene Davis — As vice president of marketing and operations for Ski Utah for more than 39 years, she orchestrated creative advertising and promotions that helped place Utah on a competitive level with the world’s leading ski regions and generated billions of dollars in media exposure. Her local ski/ride promotions became National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month, Bring a Friend Skiing Initiatives, and Discover Winter, a program to foster a love of skiing and snowboarding among Utah’s ethnically diverse community. In addition, her Utah Fifth Grade Passport and Fourth Grade Learn to Ski Programs introduced 15,000 students to the sport annually.
