The spirit of Turiya Holistic Day Spa’s philosophy hangs on the walls.
Turiya’s owner, Terry Todd, chose a larger-than-life-sized, two-dimensional wood carving of Buddha above the reception desk as the welcome mat to set the tone. Todd decorated her new spa with a collection of far-Eastern items and large, comfortable couches and pillows she sewed herself, and tapestries she also sewed. The result is an East-meets-West attitude, and the feeling that customers are entering into Todd’s home. Todd says many of her clients have asked her if she lives there.
Turiya offers the expected day spa services staff will shape and paint fingernails, cut and wax hair, give massages and facials — but this spa also offers services to nourish and soothe the mind. Meditations are written on the wall recommending that spa clients take the time to “awaken your spirit,” and to contemplate “true silence.”
“It’s not just about the physical,” Todd explains. “We want people to go away feeling we made a difference for them and it seems to be working.”
Turiya is an expansion of Todd’s four-year old business beside the Jeremy Store. Todd, an esthetician, had been hoping to develop her two-office room business into something more, and the opportunity came she says, when she found a 2,000-square-foot unit in the mining era-inspired Quarry Village. She opened mid-November last year.
In addition to a salon, the spa offers a massage room, two esthetician rooms, a meditation room and a larger room for classes. Todd says she will be holding regular classes and discussions in the larger room each month, such as creative journaling, spiritual guidance and alternative medicine.
A decade ago, Todd, a watercolor artist from Salt Lake, began practicing Transcendental Meditation, which strives to help people gain deep relaxation and eliminate stress, she says.
“It’s a meditation brought from India from masters and the reason for it is to quiet the mind, and to release the negative,” Todd explains, adding that she often teaches meditation techniques she has learned to clients, and that she plans to invite the teachers she learned from for discussions at her spa.
The name “Turiya” comes from a stage in the “om” meditation chant that means “absolute.”
Todd says that her staff and she are like-minded when it comes to the combination of physical and spiritual attention at a spa.
“We all want the same thing: we want to make a difference,” Todd says.
Todd works with her daughter, Kara, who is also a certified esthetician. Both are trained to perform micro-dermabrasion and chemical peels. Other treatments, performed by trained doctors include dermal fillers and Botox treat.
While many may find their first impression of Turiya to be luxurious, Todd keeps prices affordable, she says, offering a special rate to members of her spa on top of pricing her menu as low as possible just enough to make money, she says. Facials at the spay typically range from $45 to $70, and haircuts range from $20 to $35.
The Turiya staff trained in massage can perform deep-tissue massage as well as pregnancy massage, and couples massage.
According to Todd, more and more, the Western world seems to be ready for Eastern approaches to a healthy lifestyle and ready to embrace a spa like hers. Todd reports that thanks to her previous strong local following, the spa’s unique combination has been successful from the start.
“I wanted people to be totally relaxed and let go. I really feel like in order for us to make a difference, we have to address the mental side too,” she said. “Our philosophy is not just physical. We want [our clients] to leave always feeling we made a difference for them — and it seems to be working.”
