To avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, Summit County Attorney David Brickey says he asked the Salt Lake District Attorney’s Office to review a case against a former Summit County Sheriff’s Office captain.
Kamas resident Joe Offret was arrested Feb. 1 after he allegedly rolled his vehicle on Brown’s Canyon Road during a snowstorm. According to a Utah Highway Patrol investigator, “Offret appeared to have alcohol in his system.”
But it may take another week before prosecutors decide whether to file criminal charges against Offret.
“We are looking at that case,” said Bob Stott, public information officer for the Salt Lake District Attorney’s Office. “We do not talk about cases until charges are filed.”
Offret retired from the Sheriff’s Office a few days after the crash, Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said.
According to Offret’s attorney Bruce Savage, the amount of alcohol in Offret’s blood around the time of the crash was “well under” Utah’s legal limit of .08 grams.
“Here [Offret] is, because of the road conditions, facing criminal prosecution,” Savage said Thursday.
