Park Silly Sunday Market has a four-year contract extension along with a three-year renewal option that could put the annual event on Main Street until 2030.

The Park City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to approve the agreement. The market will be held 11 Sundays in June through September on lower Main Street only, from Heber Avenue to Deer Vally Drive. The hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with opening day on June 9.

The Silly Market is an ecofriendly open-air artist and farmers market and street festival with a mission to incubate local and nonprofit businesses. It started in 2006 as a 17-day market and has been a popular attraction.

Based on community feedback, the event was reduced to 15 days, then 14 and then to 11 days this year. The post office was no longer part of the programming and the number of vendors also was reduced.

Park City will continue to waive fees for parking in approved areas, building permits, applications for special event licenses, public safety services and other city services, which totaled about $64,000 this year.

Despite the schedule reduction, the 2023 event was a success, with an attendance of 183,000, according to Kate McChesny, Silly Market’s executive director. Under the contract, the market will continue to operate on the same scaled-back scope.

There has long been concern about the market’s impacts on sales at brick-and-mortar businesses on Sundays, which led to the reduced schedule and footprint.

After the changes, the Historic Park City Alliance conducted a survey and 28% of the 96 respondents in the business sector said they still feel the market negatively affected them and they preferred the event not take place.

The responses also showed that 20% liked the reduced schedule; 41% would prefer consistency with 14 markets; 6% are not affected by the market; and 5% are not open on Sundays.

After reviewing the results, the HPCA’s board voted to support the market with the same conditions as 2023.

The 2024 dates for Silly Market are June 9, 16, 23 and 30; July 14 and 21; and Sept. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. The market will not be held in August.
