The Park City Police Department in late August and on the first day of September reported numerous cases on the roads, as crowds arrived in the community for the busy Labor Day weekend.

The agency heavily patrols the roads, and traffic stops for speeding and other moving violations are commonplace.

In one case in late August, the police received information about possible road racing. That sort of complaint is unusual inside Park City.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, at 5:15 p.m., the Police Department fielded a complaint about issues with drivers on Amundsen Court. The police were told of “high speed, high races, with very high end cars,” according to department logs. The person said the issue occurred between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. over the course of several mornings.

Public police logs sometimes do not provide detailed information about cases.

Other cases reported by the police recently include:

  • On Sunday, Sept. 1 Police officers over the course of an hour-plus ending a little bit after 8 p.m. stopped a series of drivers along S.R. 224 in suspected speeding cases. Public police logs did not provide details about the speeds involved and whether the drivers received tickets or warnings. In one of the cases, the police said, a headlight on the vehicle was not working.
  • On Sept. 1 at 5:19 p.m., someone contacted the police indicating a vehicle was speeding and “making a lot of noise” in a parking area along Kearns Boulevard. The vehicle was a white Audi, the police were told. The department classified the case as suspected disturbing the peace.
  • On Sept. 1 at 8:32 a.m., a police officer pulled over a driver on S.R. 224, indicating the vehicle was traveling at 67 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. Public police logs did not provide details about whether the officer issued a warning or a ticket.
  • On Sept. 1 at 12:01 a.m., a police officer stopped a driver in the area of the intersection of Main Street and Heber Avenue, listing a variety of suspected traffic offenses. The police said the stop involved a lane violation, impeding traffic, a turn-signal violation and a horn violation. Public police logs did not provide details about whether the driver received warnings or tickets.
  • On Saturday, Aug. 31, at 5:50 p.m., an officer pulled over a driver in the area of the intersection of Swede Alley and Heber Avenue and described the case as distracted driving. Public police logs did not provide details about the circumstances leading the officer to determine the driver was distracted. • On Aug. 31 at 4:03 p.m., an officer pulled over a driver in the area of the intersection of Bonanza Drive and Prospector Avenue after, public police logs said, observing the person following the police vehicle “too closely” for approximately one mile. The Park City Police Department pulled over a series of drivers recently at speeds well above the posted limits.

The police in Park City regularly conduct traffic patrols in a variety of places, including in neighborhoods and along the entryways. Speeding and other traffic offenses have long been one of the chief law enforcement-related complaints of Parkites. The Police Department combats speeding through a variety of measures, including conducting traffic patrols and the posting of digital speed signs that display how fast a driver is traveling.

Public police logs in some cases did not provide details about whether a driver received a ticket or a warning, but officers are believed to issue warnings in many cases unless an offense is egregious or the person is a repeat offender.

Some of the recent cases:

  • On Sunday, Aug. 25, at 8:20 a.m., a driver was pulled over in the area of Park Avenue and Prospector Drive after the vehicle was seen traveling at 65 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.
  • On Aug. 25 at 7:55 a.m., an officer stopped a driver in the area of the intersection of Park Avenue and Payday Drive, indicating the vehicle was traveling at 73 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 45 mph.

The Park City Police Department received a recent report of a bobcat sighting on or close to a trail that is just outside heavily developed Old Town.

The agency fielded the report at 12:04 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23. Public police logs place the location on the Mother Urban Trail. One end of the trail begins in the area of the Empire Avenue-Lowell Avenue switchback. The land is close to the southern and western portions of Old Town.

The police were told the animal was “aggressive,” the logs indicated. The person who contacted the police indicated “he left it alone” but did not “want other people to run into them,” the logs said.

Bobcat sightings are rare inside Park City, but they are notable since the animals can pose a risk to people and pets. The location in the Aug. 23 case is also of consequence being so close to residential streets in Old Town. The neighborhood climbs hillsides and is close to open space and the terrain at the mountain resorts.

The Police Department regularly receives wildlife reports involving moose, elk and deer, including in and around Old Town. Officers who respond to the cases typically attempt to ensure the safety of people and the animals.

The police over the course of several days, meanwhile, received several complaints about a young moose in the area of Holiday Ranch Loop Road. It was not clear from the agency’s logs whether the same animal was seen in each of the cases.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, at 12:44 p.m., a young moose was seen “by itself” in a park close to a dirt jump off Holiday Ranch Loop Road. Two days earlier, at 5:20 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, a young moose was reported near a playground along Holiday Ranch Loop Road.

There were also reports in the same area of a young moose on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and Wednesday Aug. 21. The person who contacted the police on Aug. 21 told the agency the animal had been there several days.

On Aug. 21, meanwhile, the police at 1:17 p.m. were told of a deer in the area of Little Kate Road and Racquet Club Drive. The deer was “off to the side” and not blocking the road, the police said. It was not clear from the logs whether the report involved a living animal or a carcass.

Park City police officers stopped a series of drivers in the middle of August for suspected speeding, some well above the posted limits.

Speeding and other traffic-related offenses have long been some of the chief complaints of Parkites, and the Police Department has attempted to respond to the concerns through traffic patrols and other measures like the deployment of digital speed trailers.

Public police logs in some cases did not provide details about whether a driver received a warning or a ticket. Officers, though, are believed to issue warnings in many cases unless the person is a repeat offender or the offense is deemed to be egregious.

The most recent cases were logged during the final weeks of the traditional summer-tourism season.

In one notable stretch, the police over the course of 31 minutes pulled over three drivers on S.R. 248 in the area of Quinn’s Junction. The vehicles were traveling between 71 mph and 77 mph in locations where the posted speed limit is 55 mph. Public police logs did not provide details about whether the drivers received citations or warnings.

Some of the other recent cases:

  • On Sunday, Aug. 18, at 9:19 p.m., an officer pulled over a driver in the area of the intersection of Kearns Boulevard and Sidewinder Drive, indicating the vehicle was traveling at 50 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 35 mph. Public police logs indicated the officer wrote a citation for traveling at 40 mph.
  • On Aug. 18 at 7:39 a.m., an officer stopped a driver on S.R. 224 at 71 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 45 mph. The vehicle registration was expired as well, the police said.
  • On Friday, Aug. 16, at 8:02 a.m., an officer stopped a driver on S.R. 248 at Quinn’s Junction, indicating the vehicle was traveling at 82 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 55 mph.
  • On Aug. 16 at 7:48 a.m., an officer pulled over a vehicle on S.R. 248 at Quinn’s Junction after observing the vehicle traveling at 73 mph in a location where the posted speed limit is 55 mph.

Moose are moving about Park City.

The Park City Police Department has received a string of recent reports about sightings. Some of the cases were reported along busy roads, while at least one of the other cases was on a trail.

One of the moose reports involved a collision between a van and a calf. The accident was reported at 3:19 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, in the area of the intersection of S.R. 224 and Holiday Ranch Loop Road. The moose was apparently “off the side of the road” afterward, according to public police logs. Nobody in the van was injured, but the vehicle suffered unspecified damage.

The police said the animal did not sustain any visible injuries. The department also said “a protective mother moose was near and would not allow officers to ascertain the calf’s condition.”

The Police Department regularly receives reports of moose and other wildlife. The cases are especially notable in the vicinity of roads since the presence of animals creates the danger of collisions between drivers and wildlife.

Some of the recent cases included:

  • On Saturday, Aug. 10, at 2:37 p.m., a moose was seen on a sidewalk in the area of the intersection of S.R. 224 and Meadows Drive.
  • On Aug. 10 at 7:06 a.m., a moose was seen close to the road in the area of the intersection of S.R. 224 and Meadows Drive.
  • On Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 1:24 p.m., a moose was seen eating close to the road along Telemark Drive.
  • On Monday, Aug. 5, at 9:10 a.m., a moose was seen on a trail off Lowell Avenue. The animal was on or close to Jenni’s Trail, the police were told.

The police, meanwhile, on Aug. 9 at 2:31 p.m. were told of a deer reported to have suffered a leg injury seen in bushes off Kearns Boulevard. The animal was close to playing fields, the police were told.
