They say patience is a virtue, and it certainly was true for the Miners girls soccer team as they hosted the Hurricane Tigers in the second round of the 3A state playoffs. Although initially struggling to gets shots into the net, persistence paid off and earned Park City the 2-0 victory. "We were getting the opportunities. We knew we would finish strong," said head coach Chip Cook. "It was just a test of being patient and not getting frustrated." Part of the problem was Hurricane’s game preparations. Although unable to match the Miners’ skills, they were able to defend numerous Park City scoring tries in the first half, keeping both teams scoreless at the half. "They stepped in front of our shots really well," said Park City goalie Alex Phillips. Park City’s defense was having a strong game as well. The Miners kept the Tigers’ ball from scoring and forced the ball into Hurricane’s territory for most of the time, allowing the offense their numerous shots at goal. "Our defense was really solid today, so it helped a lot to push the ball to our offense," Phillips said. In the second half, the Miners scored twice. The first came early in the second, when Hanna Terry sent the ball into the corner of the net off of a pass from Kelly Islieb. The Miners scored again, but not from any Park City player. Instead, the Hurricane defense accidentally deflected a ball near the their own goal into the net to bring the score to 2-0. "It was kind of destined to happen," Cook said. "The ball was too close to the net too many times." Park City heads to the next round of the playoffs, where they will be facing Waterford on Friday at Bonneville High School. Bonneville boasts an official soccer field, which likely will help the Miners, who usually play well on large surfaces where they can execute there a wide style of play. "We like to play the long ball, so the width gives us space," Phillips said. The Miners will face Waterford on Friday, Oct. 21 at noon at Bonneville High School.
