Here we go with Deer Valley (Alterra) swallowing Mayflower and thumbing their noses at some high percentage of current and former members of the U.S. military. As I wrote in a letter back in June 2021, when it was announced that the Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) was going to provide up to $260 million in bonds for the Mayflower development, I was deeply concerned that the project would ultimately be taken over by Alterra and that indeed snowboarders would not be welcomed. I wrote then that snowboarding military personnel would be discriminated against and that the whole thing was a ploy to get military funding but without a real commitment to all service personnel.
As expected, Alterra confirmed this week that they would take the entire project to basically expand Deer Valley and that snowboarding will still not be allowed. Sorry for those in the military who board. Tough luck.
This has been a sham from the get-go, and now it is official.
By the way, I don’t have a dog in the fight here. I am a lifelong skier and not a member of the military. But I do understand honor, integrity and fairness, and those seem to be absent here.
