The Summit County Sheriff’s Office reported that a deputy suffered minor injuries while stopping a wrong-way driver on U.S. 40 early Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 6:55 a.m., the Summit County Emergency Communications Center received reports that a pickup truck was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 40 near mile marker 15. Dispatchers continued to receive reports that the truck was heading from Wasatch County toward Summit County.

Summit County deputies responded to the area to attempt to locate the wrong-way driver, officials said. A summit County patrol deputy spotted the wrong-way vehicle near mile 3.5 on US 40. The wrong-way driver was traveling westbound in the left lane of the eastbound travel lanes. The Summit County deputy was able to intercept the wrong way driver by positioning his own vehicle into the path of the wrong-way vehicle.

The Summit County deputy was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries sustained during the crash and has since been released from the hospital. No injuries were reported by the driver of the wrong-way vehicle.  

The Utah Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the incident.
