It was another match, another dominant victory for the Miners boys golf squad last Wednesday at River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy City. Park City cleared second place Stansbury by 23 strokes, their widest margin of their young season.

The Miners have now crushed their competition in all three of their regional matches this season: winning their first match at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course Aug. 13 by 16 strokes and their second Aug. 21 at Murray by 21.

Next up for Park City is their home match Sept. 12 at Park City Golf Club, their home course. Players will begin teeing off at 8:30 a.m., with each team’s lowest players going first. In Utah high school golf regional matches, eight players play and six of their scores are counted towards their team score — meaning almost everyone needs to bring their A game.

“It was solid,” Head Coach George Murphy said of the River Oaks win. “It was really good to see Lucas (Sweeney excel).”

Sweeney had his best round of the season, 70, which was good enough for a tie for third. He is the fourth-ranked golfer in Region 10, behind Miners star Rawson Hardy, Forrest Summers, also of Park City, and Tommy Yates of Stansbury.

Hardy, just a junior, shot a 68 last Wednesday, for the second match in a row.

Murphy said the team fought off a shorter yet difficult course — River Oaks has narrow fairways and narrow, fast greens — and windy conditions to get the job done.

He said wants the team to keep the ball rolling and not get ahead of themselves.

“We don’t look past any any tournament,” Murphy added. “Home tournament in Park City, we want to play well there.”

The team pushes each other as hard as any of their competitors at these matches, Murphy said. Only six players will play at the state tournament in mid-October.

Murphy said he likes the team’s odds at state, given the individual improvements he’s seen, and feels this group has more depth than last year’s that took home third.

Other Miners playing great golf are Sam Hunt, Linus Einum and Chase Coulson. Those players are ranked 7th, 9th and 11th in the region, with average scores all under 79.

“We’ve got to be more prepared for state, but I think we’re doing that in practices,” said Murphy. “A couple kids stayed at the range yesterday (after practice) just to work on things, other kids played nine holes.”

Murphy said this will be the first year he’ll take practice results into state lineup consideration. He’s thinking about 70% weight on match results and 30% practice, hoping the internal competition stays healthy and beneficial.

After the home match next week, Park City will have four more regional matches. State is scheduled for Oct. 16 and 17 at Meadow Brook Golf Club in Taylorsville.

“We’re at a good point in the season,” said Murphy. “They’re still challenging themselves to improve and play better, and keep working on the little things that are going to make a difference down the stretch.”

South Summit football falls to 0-2 Friday

A four-and-a-half hour drive proved to be no problem at all for the Miners football squad, who thrashed Dixie 41-0 Friday to move to 3-0.

The Dixie game was Park City’s final non-region game.

The Miners jumped all over Dixie early, scoring 21 in the first quarter. Park City scored a touchdown each quarter from there, shutting Dixie out for their second shutout of the season.

The Miners backfield stood out in what head coach Josh Montzingo called a complete team win.

“It’s always interesting handling a long trip,” said Montzingo. “Looking at four or five hours of riding before you play a game and going down to a place that’s definitely a little warmer than we’re used to, so there were some obstacles that could have been in the way, but the kids handled it perfectly.”

Both running backs Eli Warner and Ethan Cunningham, whom Montzingo called his thunder and lightning, had two rushing touchdowns. Cunningham’s, only a sophomore, were his first, and Warner’s two moved him up to seven on the season. Cunningham has been running for the team’s hard yards this season, and Warner, the breakaways.

Star quarterback Bash Bodily had a 64-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. Safety Harper Brent had a 30-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.

Montzingo lauded his group’s physicality across the board, especially his wide receiver room. He said their blocking played a big role in their four touchdown rushing performance.

No Miner struggled in the heat Friday, despite temperatures in St. George reaching 99 degrees.

“Ethan is only a sophomore, and he’s been carrying the load for us as far as hard, tough yardage in between the tackles all year and just hasn’t quite found the end zone yet, and was able to finally crack it,” added Montzingo. “That was really great to see him get rewarded for all the hard work he’s done for the offense.”

Montzingo added that everytime Warner gets a touch, he “makes a lot of magic happen.”

Montzingo wants to see his team continue with their physical brand of football as the season wears on. He loved seeing all 11 guys on defense swarm around the football in pursuit.

The Miners get Hillcrest Friday night for their regional-opener and homecoming game. Park City defeated Hillcrest 44-0 last season. However, Montzingo knows his squad can’t afford to overlook any regional foe, especially with the distractions of homecoming week going on.

The Miners will follow the Hillcrest game with consecutive road games against Murray and Stansbury on Sept. 13 and 20, respectively.

“Another night for us to go put another great effort together as a team,” Montzingo said. “I expect nothing less than going out there, working on what we need to work on each week and getting better as a group and trying to refine little details.”

Montzingo is confident his team’s A game will be good enough to handle business Friday.

Park City will have to focus on stopping Hillcrest’s air raid style offense, which tends to be pass heavy and stretch out defenses. While Hillcrest is 0-3 this season, they have put up 58 points in those games.

“They’ll have a lot of challenges back there, but our guys are up to that task, and they’ll be ready to handle it,” said Montzingo. “As far as their defense, usually up front, they tend to bring a lot of pressure inside and try to disrupt the box and cause a lot of chaos with your lineman and maybe get your eyes off the ball and what you would normally do to execute.”

The offensive line will need to be focused and prepared for the pressure.

The Miners know they can’t count on beating Hillcrest or anyone just because their successful 2023 team did. They want to get the win and keep the momentum positive heading into their two game road trip.

Park City will return to Dozier Field after Friday on Sept. 27 to take on Cottonwood.

The game served as Park City's home-opener, where they filled the entirety of the Dozier Field stands on a picturesque late-summer night.

It was tough sledding for the Miners football squad Friday night in a back-and-forth nailbiter with Timpanogos at Dozier Field, but the team finally escaped late in the fourth quarter following a Brian Roberts touchdown run with less than a minute to go.

Roberts sent the Dozier stands into another frenzy on the picturesque, late-summer night. Throughout Friday, parents cheered, the student section waved Park City and American flags up in the air and latecomers spilled into the lawns at Park City High, enjoying a bite to eat, grabbing their Miners merchandise for the season and sharing time with their friends.

The statement-making, early-season win moved Park City to 2-0 this year. The team has at least three more chances to pack Dozier and eight more to lace up their cleats and strap on their helmets.

Bodily and Warner each scored in the team’s Aug. 16 season-opening win over rival Wasatch

Head coach Josh Montzingo attributed his stifling defense’s fourth quarter slip up to some poor luck.

Montzingo huddled up with his boys and congratulated them on a gritty win he felt they earned with their hard yards this summer. He urged them to use the weekend to rest up, given the team’s lengthy four-plus hour trek to St. George this week to take on Dixie. While the Miners often have a home advantage in altitude, they will lose that this week, when the temperatures are expected to reach into triple digits Friday.

Dixie is 0-2 to start their season, suffering blowout losses to Springville and Mountain Ridge. Like Timpanogos, Dixie will come for some revenge, having lost to Park City in both the 2023 regular and postseason.

The Miners will miss their loyal supporters, many of whom in the student body rushed the field with flags Friday night while the final seconds ticked off. The team will be back at home Sept. 6 to open regional play against Hillcrest.

“Super hard-fought game,” said Montzingo Friday. “You’ve got to give them a ton of credit (the Miners defense and team). That’s a really, really good team over there.”

Montzingo is looking for his squad to keep up the physical brand of Park City football. He said that would have been easy to abandon Friday after getting scored on and potentially rattled. Montzingo sees Dixie as another opportunity to out-physical someone, as well as to keep improving and add in little wrinkles.

Senior #14, Sebastian Bodily, throws the ball down field. Credit: File photo by Clayton Steward/Park Record

Bodily said he loved the physicality he saw from his teammates Friday, especially on the defensive side when the moment got big. He credited strength coach Matt Herhal and speed coach Dave Yocum for sharpening the team and improving their second and third lines.

“Our last touchdown was with our second string fullback,” said Bodily. “Just a great game.”

Both Bodily and Warner know they can take it to Dixie and any team in the state, so long as they stay focused and bring their A-game.

Warner is stepping into a more prominent leadership role this year with graduated star running back Will McCurdy no longer in the fold. Warner closed out the huddle Friday as requested by his head ball coach.

The team evidently has their sites set towards the state semifinals and finals in October at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Field, where they faltered last fall. On whether this year’s team can get over the hump for a program-first state title, Warned exclaimed, “Yessir, absolutely.”

There’s a new boys golf team this fall in Park City. New faces, new swings, new shots — but the results appear to be the exact same.

On Aug. 13 the Miners picked back up where they left off, winning their season-opening match by 16 strokes at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele. Stansbury finished in second place.

The 2023 Park City squad finished third at the state tournament. They also dominated the regular season and region. It is the Miners second-straight year back in the 4A classification.

“It was good, really solid start,” said Miners head coach George Murphy. “We started pretty fast last year too, and that’s going to be the challenge, just to keep it going all the way through state.”

Park City found their toughest competition last fall to be the southern schools that have better access to golf year round and warm conditions during the fall season. The 2023 state tournament was filled with brisk weather and plenty of rain.

The regular season matches are scored by compiling each team’s top six scores out of eight players. At state, four scores are compiled, but out of just six players.

The Miners will be looking to replace their 2023 two player Ty Brady, who moved out of town before this year. They have a team loaded with contributing seniors, as well as a star golfer in junior Rawson Hardy.

Park City has seven more matches before state Oct. 16 and 17 at Meadow Brook Golf Club in Taylorsville. The goal is to improve every match and every day at practice, with the idea of competing hard for the state title.

The Miners will host one match Sept. 12.

Forrest Summers, Hardy, Samuel Hunt and Jeremiah Marsh were Park City’s four scorers Aug. 13, shooting 66, 70, 71 and 72. Summers, Hardy and Hunt were state players last fall, with Marsh stepping up his game this season.

Murphy said he had over 50 kids show up for tryouts, gunning for 11 varsity spots. He’s confident more kids like Marsh will join the varsity ranks and contribute after this year’s senior class moves on.

“Continue to work on the the small things,” added Murphy on his program. “Put that amount of effort into your weaknesses. … It elevates your game. That’s how their handicaps drop, and they’re able to be really competitive at these tournaments. They look forward to carrying that into October.”

Murphy knows a lot of the team’s success will hinge on maintaining positivity. He’s seeking natural leaders to step up and those who aren’t to keep strong attitudes. He said the team should push each other to their best.

Next up for the Miners is Wednesday’s second match at Murray. The hosts are some of the team’s strongest competitors, finishing third in the Oquirrh match. Murphy said the team has played the course before and things should be pretty straightforward but with a bit more distance.

Park City also has a Friday match at Copper Golf Course in Magna.

The Miners football squad opened up their season with a bang Friday, traveling to Heber City and taking down rival Wasatch 17-0.

Park City hasn’t lost to Wasatch since 2021, and they didn’t take any chances Friday. They jumped out to an early lead due to a first quarter rushing touchdown from star halfback Eli Warner. They’d tack on a Tanner Pidwell 32-yard field goal in the second quarter and Warner would catch a 26-yard touchdown pass from fellow star Bash Bodily to put the game on ice in its final minutes.

The Miners standout defense held Wasatch in check the entire game. That balanced offense and stingy defense are Park City staples; head coach Josh Montzingo had predicted they’d pick back up where they left off last season.

“Always great to beat your rival,” Montzingo said. “Especially when it’s the first game of the year, when we’re still learning.”

Montzingo thinks his team left some points on the board Friday. He was pleased however with the effort and growth from his younger players especially.

Warner and Bodily were significant contributors in 2023, while Pidwell and sophomore back Ethan Cunningham were stepping into new roles. Montzingo said Cunningham did a lot of gritty, critical running Friday for about 80 yards.

Montzingo wants to keep getting new guys experience as the season wears on to provide the team more depth.

He was also happy with how his boys handled the rowdy, rivalry atmosphere. The Miners only have four regular season home games this season. Week three, they make the nearly five-hour road trip down to St. George to take on Dixie.

“That’s what they wanted,” added Montzingo. “Our kids don’t care if it’s directed at them or for them, as long as there’s energy and there’s cheering and enthusiasm going on the stands, they’re excited about it. They feed off that, and they kind of like to be the villain sometimes. I think that gives them a little extra juice.”

Montzingo thought the group was much less nervous and more ready to go than in previous season openers. He credited the strength and conditioning staff and the summer work they did for the absence of cramping and other injuries.

Montzingo is ready for Timpanogos to come to Dozier Field this week, where his team always receives top-notch home support. That game will kickoff this Friday at 7 p.m. He knows the strong foe will come ready to exact some revenge; Park City defeated Timpanogos twice, including the playoff quarterfinals, last season.

The Miners hope that playing at home provides them with an altitude-related home advantage as well.

Montzingo said Timpanogos is a very talented, well-coached team.

“New Year, different personnel,” said Montzingo. “Different things here and there will be featured based on what they do for defense, what they do for offense, but mostly it’s our offense; it’s our defense. We do what we do.”

Montzingo hopes to see the Dozier stands packed again and with screaming fans. He said there aren’t many home, high school environments like what they have, something his son Tyler (a 2024 graduate) and other former players have told him.

“There’s nothing like playing a Friday night on Dozier,” Montzingo said.
