July 11, 1933 – March 17, 2024

Maynard Lugibihl Mann, Jr, 90, passed away in his home on Sunday March 17, 2024, from complications of COPD. Maynard was born to Helen Higgenbotham and Maynard Lugibihl Mann on July 11, 1933, in Blufton, Ohio. Although his mother, who went by the name Honey, always called him Maynard, he referred to himself throughout his adult life as M.L. or Mike.
Mike was an adventurer who discovered his love for the mountains as a college student at the Colorado School of Mines. He then served in the Korean war, and after returning he earned an engineering degree from Georgia Tech, whose mascot was the breed of dog he grew up with, the bulldog. He later moved to Michigan to attend MSU where he earned his MBA.
It was while living in Michigan, through his activity in community theater, that he met Janet Catherine Abel, whom he soon married. He adopted her two young children, and then moved the family to South Bend, Indiana, and then to Summit County, Utah, where he was again able to be in his beloved mountains.
Mike was an outdoors enthusiast, and taught his children to ski, camp, and engage with the natural world. He loved to sky dive, and he piloted his own small two-seater plane. Once settled in Utah, when there wasn’t snow on the slopes, he cycled around the Park City area, and would ride down to Salt Lake City and back up Parley’s Canyon. He loved puttering in his workshop, and built an addition to his home in Summit Park. He spoke Russian, and loved spy thrillers and watching Ironside and Columbo.
Health issues motivated his move to San Antonio, Texas, in the early 2000’s, and he spent a great deal of time in Mexico, a place he deeply loved. As he continued to struggle with his health, he made the decision to move to Fort Worth, where Steve, Janine, and their adult children lived. It was in Fort Worth where he met the love of his life, Del Jennings, who became his constant companion and delight. They loved spending time together, and would go for long drives, and watch the Rangers play baseball. When Del passed away in 2023 Mike lost the light that had surrounded him for a decade, and his entire family felt that loss. Mike never lost his enthusiasm for life, though, and to the end was disappointed that his body had finally had enough.
Mike was so appreciative and grateful for the care provided by Heart to Heart Hospice, his amazing nurse Lisa Hunt, and the aides who worked to care for him, Patty Hinnenberg and London Brookie. Mike’s family expresses that same appreciation and gratitude to these people, and to all who cared for, loved, and valued Mike throughout his life.
Mike is survived by his children, Steve (Janine) Mann, and Susan Imhoff Bird, and his seven grandchildren, Eric, Lucas, Nick, and Nathan (Hayley) Mann, and Beau, Caitlin, and Allegra Imhoff. Mike was preceded in death by his grandson Jake Imhoff, in 2010.

June 17, 1940 – March 17, 2024

Jere Laeng Calmes, 83, of Park City, Utah, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2024 surrounded by friends.

Born on June 17, 1940, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Fred and Antoinette Calmes, Jere was a beloved father, grand-father, great grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He was a man of many accomplishments and passions.

A Life of Achievements
Jere graduated from DePauw University with a BA in History and went on to receive a master’s degree in History from the University of Kentucky. It was at De-Pauw that he met his first wife, Bonnie Fields (Oeler), and they were married in 1962.

Jere’s career in publishing took a unique turn when he worked for Holt, Rinehart & Winston in New York City. There, in a decision against his manager’s will that almost got him fired, he signed an author for an economics textbook that became a massive global success, generating millions for his company ultimately leading to multiple editions in several languages.

This act of defiance earned him recognition as the company’s best employee and a trip to Barbados; Jere opted instead for a trip to Park City, Utah and pursued his love for mountains.

In 1975, Jere moved his family to Park City, a place that would become his true home, even though he remained a Yankees fan until the end. He became a successful entrepreneur, as an owner / manager of the Corner Store, Main Street Deli, and Le Pavilion.

A Pillar of the Park City Community
Jere’s influence extended far beyond his businesses. He served as the Master of Ceremonies at Ernie’s Rodeo, reflecting his love for horses and the Western spirit. Notably, he was also the first President of the Park City Chamber of Commerce and played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Egyptian Theater on Main Street. He was influential in bringing the Sundance Film Festival to Park City (origi-nally known as the US film festival).

Along with his business and community leadership skills he was also a talented performer. He graced the stages of Park City Performances in various plays and musicals, but his most memorable role was playing Felix Unger opposite Lloyd Steven in Neil Simon’s “The Odd Cou-ple.” He also hosted a Sunday morning radio show on KPCW with Ron Burnett and David Fleischer aptly named ‘The Morning After’ where his listeners tuned in to hear the latest ‘bagel report.

His adventurous spirit led him to post-Soviet Russia where he became a visiting professor at the American Institute of Business and Economics (AIBEc).

Later, In the mid 90’s his adventurous spirit led him to an 18-month career as a commercial truck driver for C. R. England Trucking Company. Jere found his way back to publishing in 2000, working for Entrepreneur magazine.

A Man of Passion and Love
Jere’s life was enriched by his love for the snow, the mountains, skiing and the company of friends and family. He especially cherished Sunday dinners and he enjoyed a good scotch on the rocks (neat if a single-malt).

Traveling the world and delving into history, particularly World War II and the Civil War, were also passions he pursued with enthusi-asm. Jere had a deep appreciation for folk music, especially Irish ballads. He could often be found in great Park City watering holes like Adolph’s, Sneakers or The Down Under harmonizing with his friends.

Speaking of harmonizing, Jere will also be remembered for his fearless conducting of St. Mary’s Choir (an eclectic bunch of holiday revelers who loved to sing car-ols) each Christmas Eve for Father Pat’s midnight mass. To know Jere was to know his quirks, he wasn’t a fan of smartphones, streaming TV services, the ever-present traffic on Main Street, or California license plates to name a few.

Jere’s memory lives on with his daugh-ter, Erin, and son, Jere (Yana). He is also cherished by his grandchildren Anton (Alyssa, Paulina, Matvey, Mikaela, and Jere Oliver, his great-granddaughter Caroline, and his nephews David and Doug. Jere was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Tony, and his brother Fred (Lynn).

A viewing will be held from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM at Heber Valley Funeral Home (288 N Main Street, Heber City, Utah, 84032) on Wednesday, March 27th, with a service to follow at 3:00 PM. The interment at the Heber City Cemetery will occur shortly thereafter. An after service gathering will be held at The Corner Store at the Park City Resort at 5:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Jere’s favorite charity – the Wounded Warriors Project.

April 17, 1959 – March 12, 2024

With profoundly heavy hearts, we share the passing of Dave Macfarlane, beloved husband, father, friend, and adventurer.

Dave departed from this world on March 12, 2024 in the Lemhi Mountains, leaving a deep and meaningful legacy of love, kindness, and friendship.

Born on April 17, 1959, to James and Carol Macfarlane, Dave spent his childhood in Salt Lake City, attending Highland High School and graduating from the University of Utah in 1983. An accomplished athlete with an insatiable zest for adventure, Dave lived each day fully, embracing family, friends, work, and community. His genuine, humble and thoughtful character along with his positive, curious spirit endeared him to all fortunate to know him.

Dave possessed an exceptional reverence for the land and nature, embodying the ethos of stewardship instilled by his family’s rich history of ranching and exploration in the West, particularly in the wilderness of the Wasatch and Uinta mountains. A passionate, skilled outdoorsman, Dave found his greatest inspiration, joy and peace in the mountains, whether skiing pristine powder, navigating rugged terrain with his faithful mules, or simply gazing towards vast peaks and valleys. He reveled in studying the history, terrain, and geography of a place, his knowledge enhanced by his collection of topographic maps. Dave’s adventurous spirit was also contagious, and he delighted in sharing his passion for the natural environment with loved ones.

In addition to loving the outdoors, Dave was a dedicated mentor and advocate for young adults, friends, and employees, fostering a close knit, supportive culture and atmosphere within his printing business, IC Group, where he served as CEO and President since 1992. His leadership was intentional, courageous, and impactful, focused on continuous improvement and innovation with the business and his partners and the health and wellness of people his belief in human connection. Dave generously, respectfully, and discreetly supported individuals seeking guidance in education, career development, and financial assistance or in need of any type of help along the way.

He had a deeply meaningful and personal value of service to others across his various communities. Above all, Dave cherished being a devoted husband and father, providing a complete and unwavering love, presence, and encouragement to his wife Tami and children Grace and William. His kindness, wisdom, and empathy were unwavering, and his absence leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones, friends, and community.

Although Dave no longer walks among us, his spirit lives on in the cherished memories we hold dear and the mountain ranges he explored. Rest peacefully, dear Dave, knowing we carry you in our hearts and with us on our adventures forever.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Mac Scholarship, honoring Dave and Tami’s lifelong dedication to empowering first generation individuals. A service will be held on Thursday
March 28th at 3:30pm at This is the Place Heritage Park (2601 Sunnyside Ave S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108)

03/01/1956 – 07/06/2023

Mary Jean Klismith (Schilling), 67, passed away peacefully at home in Park City, Utah, the evening of July 6, 2023 after a spirited battle with cancer. Mary was born March 1, 1956 in Madison, Wisconsin to parents Bill Schilling (dec.) and Jean (McIntyre) Schilling (dec.), and older sister Susan McIntyre.

Mary treasured growing up in Madison. She attended Edgewood High School, class of ’74 and earned a bachelor’s degree at UW-Oshkosh in Earth Science Education (1978). After teaching science in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and Salem Oregon, she moved back “home”, graduating with an M. Ed. in School Counseling from UW-Madison (1984).

Mary began her love of the Mountain West while taking family summer trips to the Rockies; but her passion flowered during three summers as a camp counselor at Colvig Silver Camps near Durango, Colorado (1973,’74,’77). The mountains became her permanent home in 1984 when she and ex-husband Paul Langley-Klismith moved to Park City, and Mary began her 36-year school counseling career: 29 years in Park City (all levels), sandwiched around 2 years at Jacksonville Elementary in Jacksonville, Oregon, and 5 years at Wasatch Middle School in Heber City, Utah. Mary poured a seeming boundless energy and passion into work. A career that gifted her with many beloved friends and the privilege of offering support to countless students.

Far beyond loving her work and city, Mary’s greatest passion flowed for her precious sons Scott (b.1988) and Daniel (b.1990). She cherished listening to them sing and play, especially together.

Mary was always active. She enjoyed swimming, hiking in national parks, volunteering at Sundance Film Festival, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and supporting Adopt a Native Elder. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sports––playing tennis in high school, and always cheering fervently for the Utah Jazz, her favorite tennis star Rafa Nadal, and of course the Green Bay Packers. She spent summers traveling with her family, often to favorite destinations Yellowstone, the Oregon coast, England, Scotland, and Spain. On many Saturdays, Mary and friends would ply the Salt Lake thrift stores with mild mischief and much laughter.

Mary had a unique, wonderful spunky presence. Those who knew her as friend or family will miss her greatly. Bon voyage dear one.

The Celebration of Mary’s Life has been planned for the first week of August. If you would like to attend, for details please contact family or friends.

Scott and Daniel want to extend a huge thank you! to loving friends and family for your relentless support through Mary’s entire process, from diagnosis to celebration.
