As candidates for public office, we are honored to have the opportunity to engage with the residents of Summit County. The upcoming election cycle provides us with a critical opportunity to discuss the policies and priorities shaping our community’s future. For the good of our community, we must ensure that this dialogue remains respectful, constructive, and focused on the issues that matter most to our constituents.
We have witnessed a troubling rise in divisive rhetoric that not only distracts from the important issues at hand but also undermines the very foundations of our democratic process. Sowing the seeds of fear and hate through negative discourse contributes to the continuing rise in political violence.
Campaigns should be a platform for discussing ideas and qualifications, not for personal attacks or misrepresentations. Unfortunately, we have seen instances where this principle has yet to be upheld. Negative campaigning and misinformation have no place in our community’s political discourse. We believe that voters deserve better.
Recognizing the urgent need for unity and civility in our political discussions, we, the candidates signing this letter, stand united in our commitment to fostering a political environment that prioritizes substance over sensationalism.
To our fellow candidates and their supporters, we invite you to join us in this commitment to run campaigns that are respectful, inclusive, and centered on the needs and aspirations of all constituents. Rather than tearing each other down, we are building a stronger and better community together.
We invite the people of Summit County and the media to join us in this effort by adopting these principles in your discussions and holding our campaigns accountable to these standards. By focusing on ideas and qualifications, we can ensure that the upcoming election truly reflects the best that our community has to offer.
It is up to each of us to refuse to let misinformation and discord divide us. Instead, we choose to stand united with our neighbors. Let us embrace this opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue about the future of our community and work together to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
